We had a record turnout at our Ice Cream Relay and at one point it looked as though we'd have to turn some runners away, but fortunately we were saved by a First Aid Angel who flew in with a defibrillator meaning we were able to exceed the limit of 150 runners that EA now impose on races where one is not provided. A huge THANK YOU to those who made the race possible and to those who have promised to help us with this requirement next year.
We had team entries from a lot of local and not-so-local clubs this year, including runners representing Aberdare (our furthest-travelled club), Bath, Bitton, Bristol & West, Chepstow, Clevedon, Great Western Runners, Southville, Westbury and a sizeable cohort of Vegan Runners complete with plant-based team names.
Full results are attached and you can see how you did overall as well as in your specific category.
It was also great to have lots of runners on hand to cheer the winners of our 3-race series (you can view those if you go to https://uk.srichinmoyraces.org/races/bristol/previous-results/2024#node-71403 and then scroll down to the 3 sets of results - Mens/Womens and the Club Competition).
This year honours went to Bristol & West for the men & boys and GWR for the women & girls.
We're hoping to be back next summer with another series of race on our home turf, the Sri Chinmoy Peace Mile, and as ever we are always aiming to improve our events so please get in touch if you have ideas, suggestions or requests.
Our race season isn't quite over yet as we still have a SBR-Mini DUATHLON in September - if you have never tried multi-sport, this event could be for you as it's run-bike-run with a choice of distances including 1k - 5k - 1k for those who want to give it a go but aren't confident on a longer distance. Any (roadworthy) bike is fine to use, even an e-bike if you can take the battery out and make it self-powered. Yes, we will check that :) https://uk.srichinmoyraces.org/self-transcendence-go-tri-bike-run-tockington-manor-school
Thanks to everyone who made the races possible, by running / volunteering or just coming along to support their friends or family members who were running.

A warm and sunny evening greeted the first race of our summer series on May 7th, with a perfectly symetrical field of 36 in the 2 Mile race and 36 in the Junior 1 Miler.
The 1 Miler was dominated by a big turnout from Bristol & West AC. In the U/13 girls, Izzy Di Bartolo broke the 6:30 barrier on our undulating course, finishing first in 6:28 ahead of Cora Lambourne (6:37) and Zuzanna Smialek (6:58). The U/13 boys top 3 all went under 6 minutes, the winner Elliott Colclough finishing in 5:45 ahead of clubmates Ali Ramdani (5:48) and Thomas Redfern (5:50). The U/16 honours went to Gabriella Ritter Sheratt (fourth overall in 5:34), Lola Simpson (5:36) and Darcy Simpson (5:49) for the girls and Barney Colclough (outright winner in 5:09), Oisin O'Halloran (very close second with 5:10) and Elijah Buscemi (5:29) for the boys. There were great performances throughout the field, including youngsters Charlie Bush (5:51) and Oscar Nash (6:01) both aged 10 on race day. Callum Skidmore did the double, finishing 6th in the 1-mile in 5:44 before challening the senior runners in the 2 miler to finish 12th overall in 12:54.
In the 2 miler there was a wider range of clubs - with Team Bath, Southville, Westbury Harriers, GWR, Vegan Runners and Charnwood AC all represented - but the mens' podium was a clean sweep for Bristol & West made up of Lee Gawler (11:00), Max McKinstry (11:19) and Robert Pope (11:22). Evergreen athlete Gary Hughes from Team Bath was our fastest 60+ runner, finishing 7th overall in 12:10, with second place in that category claimed by Paul Taylor- Morris of Southville RC (20:20). There was a strong field of 70+ men too, with Michael Wilcox (GWR) taking the honours in an excellent time of 16:56 ahead of strong challenges from clubmate John Hargreaves, Tom Burgess from Bristol & West and Charnwood's Roland Gibbard.
The women's race was won by GWR's Clare Meraz (12:50) ahead of GWR's Alice Doggrell (13:24), with third place going to Rebecca Williams from Westbury Harriers (13:29). Louise Cronin of Bristol & West won the 50-59 category in 14:46, with Kate Hoffen of Westbury Harriers a close second in 14:53 and another Westbury runner, Sandra Williams, in third place in a time of 15:30.
There were a number of family pairings, with junior runners competing in the 1-miler and one or other parent in the 2-miler, which bodes well for the Ice Cream Relay in July which as always includes a Family Team category!
Entries for our 1 miler / 2 miler events on 4th June and 25th June are open at FINDARACE.COM and team entries for the Relay (July 9th) are available now at FABIAN4 - links to all these are on our main event page https://uk.srichinmoyraces.org/races/bristol - just scroll down to the How to Enter section to sign up online.
Thanks for making our season-opener a great event, we look forward to welcoming you back for more summer evening racing on the Sri Chinmoy Peace Mile next month!

Series Titles and Awards
SERIES AWARDS & TITLES will all be announced and the prizes/trophies handed out at the relay race.
There are trophies for series winners in each category as well as separate club trophies for men and women. The awards will be based on points from the three individual races (so the relay is not included).
Points are awarded in reverse order to medals, so 1st place takes 7 points, 2nd takes 6 points and so on down to 7th place who gets a single point. For veterans and juniors, 1st place takes 3 points, 2nd takes 2 points and 3rd takes 1 point.
For the individual awards, in the event of a tie, then for each tied competitor we look at the cumulative times for all their races this season (if one competitor has completed fewer races than another then they are discounted at this stage).
For the club awards, in the event of a tie, then we look at the number of winners in each category throughout the series.

We were lucky to hold off the rain for our first running race of the season.
All the entrants in the junior 1 mile race were from Bristol & West athletic club - so well done to them!
The adult race had more variety and new winners for our races: Maciej Bialogoski for the men and Nicola Brookland for the women.

Bristol Sri Chinmoy 3 x 1 Mile Relay Race
In total we had 41 teams complete the relay race. We had some impressive 1 mile times considering that the course has a hill on it and it was the hottest day of the year (30C)!
It was nice to see that some of our regular runners brought family and friends to join them. Also nice to see some teams made up of members of different clubs.
It seems that the junior boys were thinking about the Olympics when choosing their team names!
We gave our awards for the series winners and also for the male and female club winner awards. Although not everyone can win a medal, each runner did get an ice cream. Perfect on a hot summer's evening!
21/07/2016: Results updated. A few incorrect splits have been adjusted after looking at the race video
Bristol Sri Chinmoy 2 mile and Junior 1 Mile Race
Many thanks for coming on a beautiful evening. We had a good turnout of 74 runners.
It was great to see so many runners from Emersons Green Running Club!
See current standings for the individual and club series awards. We will give out the individual series awards at the relay race on 19 July. The Club series is still not finished as points from the relay also count towards the club prizes.
Unfortunately the two adults with numbers V87 and 257 didn't give us their names so they do not appear on the results. Please contact us if you ran with these numbers and we will add your name to the results. Thank you!
See you all next time for the ever-popular 3 x 1 mile relay race. If you cannot form a team but would like to take part then come anyway and we can put you in a team on the night. We will do our best to organise some ice cream after the results too!

Bristol Sri Chinmoy 2 Mile and Junior 1 Mile Race
This season we decided to encourage under 16 athletes by giving them free entry and also their own race. The response was fantastic! Many thanks to Alison Hurford and Paul Owen for bringing their young runners.
We had 28 runners for the Junior 1 mile race. The standard was high with Ben Rawlings (first boy) finishing in 5:16 and Nancy Dineen finishing in 5:53. Not bad with our famous hill! I think a few of the adult runners were happy that the juniors had a separate race!
The junior race was dominated by runners from Bristol & West Running Club. I was particularly impressed by their group warm-up!
The senior race had a bigger variety of running clubs taking part. 1st place man was Robert Stewart from Bristol & West AC with a time of 10:22 and first place woman was Lucy Ellis, with 12:26, also from Bristol & West. A long-time friend of our races, Gary Hughes from Team Bath was first Vet50 in a time of 12:05.
See current standings for the individual and club series awards.
See you all for the 5K in June!

There was a record number of 45 Teams competing in this year’s exciting and energising 3 × 1 mile relay race. The numbers were swelled by Bristol & West AC seniors and in addition their junior runners, along with the ever present Great Western Runners, and new to our series were runners from Emersons Green RC and Frampton Cotterell Harriers.
First team over the finish line were the Men’s Bristol & West AC D Team in a fast time of 14:37, each mile time get faster and faster with splits of 5:03, 4:50, and fastest mile of the night of 4:44 from Robert Stewart, Jarlath McKenna and Mark Edwards respectively. Nearly over 2 minutes behind in a time of 16:40 were another Bristol & West AC Men’s team, Mark’s Merry Men, with Mark Burley (5:33), Charlie Pantlin (5:30), and Tom Watkins (5:37). In hot pursuit and in third place the Men’s Frampton Cotterell Harriers team, Frampton Manscaping with a time of 16:56 – Jason Bidwell (5:44), Brue Sellers (5:53) and Nick Bennett (5:19).

Maria Jones of Bristol & West AC for Team Owen was the fastest woman on the night with a time of 5:55.
This year we were excited to see so many Junior runners and we have to thank Bristol & West AC’s Ali Hurford for bringing them along to the event. First Junior Boys team was the Hurricanes of Caleb Owen (5:59), Joseph Hulls (6:21) and Charlie Hodges (6:17) coming in a time of 18:37 and a tremendous 8th overall. Second Junior Boys team was the Blizzards in a time of 19:29, followed by Grease Lightning in a time of 19:41. Joe Meands (Bristol & West AC) of the Grease Lightning Team was the fastest Junior with a time of 5:48 and at the first mile they were 5th overall. The first Junior Girls team was KMG, all from Bristol & West AC of Katie Jones (6:02), Molly Orchard (6:18) and Grace Evans (6:44) with a time of 19:04 and 11th overall. Bristol Self-Transcendence Summer Race Series Report
Daring enthusiasm
And abiding cheerfulness
Can accomplish everything on earth
Without fail.
~ Sri Chinmoy
The Bristol Self-Transcendence Summer Race Series 2015 had the most runners ever competing in the two 2 mile and 5km races. We had exactly 59 runners for each race. Although they are not on a grand scale compared to other races in the region, we do like to think that Sri Chinmoy AC offer something different where we create a family and friendly atmosphere at our races to encourage you to self-transcend and get the joy from running.
The first two mile race was won by Bristol & West AC’s Mark Edwards in a time of 10:15, the women, Louise Cronin (Great Western Runners) in a time of 13:08. That was the only race Mark Edwards competed in which left Soren Adams (Bristol & West AC) to win the Men’s Series with a third and two first places accumulating a total of 19 points. Louise Cronin continued her dominance of this year’s series with two firsts and a second place amassing a total of 20 points, thus retaining her title from last year. Her nearest rivals were Alice Doggrell (Bristol & West AC) and Chloe Potter (Westbury Harriers) with a total 12 and 11 points respectively.
In the Men 50-59 age group, once again Gary Hughes (Team Bath) was dominant and retained his title from last year with two wins in the 2 mile races with times of 11:33 and 12:35 respectively.
In the Women 50-59 Tracy Allen (Bristol & West AC) with 19 points just edged out her fellow Bristol & West AC runner Rosey Mushens by 1 point. Each time in the races they competed in they finished in the top 7 women picking up the extra points.
And once again in the Men 60-69 age group Wilf Burke defied his age with a first and a second in the 2 mile races and a win in the 5km race with a time of 21:13 and 16th place overall in that race. However, Kevin Barton and Carron Downer (Bristol & West AC) made him work hard to retain his title.
Moya Church (Great Western Runners) reclaimed her Women 60-69 title back again after a year’s absence with three wins out of three.
The ever present at our races of Steve Parson (Great Western Runners) won the Men 70+ series with two firsts and a second. All over 70 men were from Great Western Runners with Malcolm Offer and Roger Haynes who won the first 2 mile with a time of 17:05. I hope I’m that fast when I’m over 70; well I think I’ll be happy just to be running at over 70!
At the other end of the scale the Junior Boys title was won by George David (yet to be attached to a club, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he will be with Bristol & West AC sometime soon) with 7 points after his 2 mile time of 11:38 and 4th overall in that race. That has to be the performance of the series. Megan Grimshaw edged out Rachel Potter to claim the Junior Girls title.
A big thank you has to go to Jan Burke and Paul Burgess for stepping in to marshal at the last moment, and tremendous gratitude to Alan Wilcox for galvanising and encouraging so many Bristol & West AC runners to enter our races. This definitely helped Bristol & West AC, both Men and Women win the Club Championship with total points of 86 and 101 respectively. It would be great to see more clubs enter to challenge the dominance of Bristol & West AC. However, it was good to see new runners from Frampton Cotterell Harriers compete in our races this year.
As always a big thank you for all those runners (especially from Great Western Runners) who continue each year to support our races, and all those runners who have been coming for such a long time – Richard Nuell (Portishead) mentioned that he has been running in our races since 1994. At this rate I’ll have to be handing out Self-Transcendence long service medals, lol. And finally a very special thank you to photographer Rich Kenington for capturing the wonderful smiley faces at the race for all to enjoy.

“They’re lovely races – sort of parkrun with medals. Very friendly and supportive” ~ Jan Burke
The first race of our Self-Transcendence Bristol Series saw 59 runners tackle the undulating 1 mile loop around the Sri Chinmoy Peace Mile at Eastville Park. This was one of the best turn outs for the first race, enticed no doubt by the dry and sunny conditions.
Bristol & West AC were the largest contingent bringing 22 runners followed by Great Western Runners with 13 runners. As always it was great to see old faces and new runners, especially from Tring RC and Emersons Green RC. This year we have some new impressive Men and Women Club Championship trophies and last year it went right down to the relay race where it was all decided - within a matter of a few points. It could go the same way this year.
Mark Edwards (Bristol & West AC) won in a fast time of 10:15, with his first mile split of 5:05. He was followed by Team Bath runner Olly Sheppard (last year’s Series Winner) in 10:47. In the Men 50 – 59 Gary Hughes (Team Bath) won with a time of 11:33, and no doubt as the series progresses we will see him get faster to push into the top seven spot. Wilf Burke with an impressive time of 13:03 (22nd overall) won the Men 60 – 69 (and yes he got his well-earned medal). As always we are truly impressed with the ever present over 70s of Steve Parsons and Malcolm Offer (both Great Western Runners), however in this over 70s category Roger Haynes (Great Western Runners) won with a time of 17:05 and between all three of them picked up 6 points for their club, two-thirds of their men’s club championship points for this race.
Louise Cronin (Great Western Runners) (last year’s Series Winner) won the senior women in a time of 13:08, followed closely by Chloe Potter (Westbury Harriers) in a time of 13:16. The 5th women overall and first women 50 – 59 was Rosey Munchens (Bristol & West AC). The women 60 – 69 was won by Moya Church (Great Western Runners) followed by Jan Burke who was given the loudest cheer of the evening crossing the finish line.
As expected, with the number of Bristol & West AC runners they accumulated 22 points for the Men’s Club Championship, however they didn’t have it their own way as Great Western Runners women picked up 15 points, edging out the women from Bristol & West AC by 2 points.

"Looking for favourable conditions
Is like looking for twenty-four hours
Of brilliant sunshine.
Brave the stormy day,
Brave the stormy night!
Then you will not have to look
For permanent sunshine.
The permanent sunshine will itself
Come to you and befriend you."

(Pictures of some of the medal winners are in our race photo gallery)
With the mini heatwave in full swing many of the runners in our two mile race opted to warm up by chatting in the sun at the startline rather than the usual jog around the course. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, there were some big efforts made in the race and the wet sponges proved popular among overheated competitors at the finish.
Among the men, GWR claimed a 1,2,3 in the shape of Gavin Watkins, Tim Fletcher and Michael Dunkley, all of whom were in sub-12 minute form. Elsewhere in the field there were lots of improvers who beat their times from the 2-miler earlier in the season, and their time are listed below.
Sian Monahan always brings an injection of pace to the event and she took first place among the ladies, also finishing sixth overall.
Rachal Reid and Karen Lillywhite planned to take part as walkers, but their brisk finishing times (just over 26 minutes) suggest they are either very athletic walkers or got inspired to run at least part of the undulating course.
Agegroup medals went to Moya Church, Mike Nutt and Roger Haynes. Ron Denney suffered a very unfortunate fate in his first race since moving up into the 70+ agegroup. An out-of-control dog disturbing runners on the first bend led to a few collisions and to Ron getting tripped, landing with some force on his elbow. Several other runners stopped to check that Ron was ok and to inform the organisers - we didn't note all their names but we're very grateful that they showed such a kind and positive attitude when it mattered. Ron, meanwhile, impressed everyone present with his fortitude in the face of acute pain, shock and disappointment and when it was suggested that he should be awarded a 70+ medal for his efforts, spontaneous applause proved that all the other runners heartily agreed. We wish Ron a speedy recovery and his medal is on its way to him.
Runners who improved their two-mile performances:
| Runner | July | May | Improvement |
| Andy Kempson | 14.28 | 14.29 | 1 sec |
| Mark Adams | 13.08 | 13.24 | 16 sec |
| Matt Hawkins | 13.52 | 14.12 | 20 sec |
| Lorraine Thorn | 16.47 | 17.16 | 29 sec |
| Bruno Laasna | 14.48 | 15.48 | 60 sec |
| Matt Washburn | 13.53 | 15.48 | 1 min 55 sec |
And now, the prizes! These are all to be given out at the final race of the season, the 3 x 1 relay on July 18th.
Series Winners:
Moya church, GWR and Gary Hughes, City of Bath AC - each will receive a pair of running shoes kindly donated by Mizuno.
Agegroup Winners:
Mike Nutt (50-59), Martin Church, GWR (60-69), Audrey Butler, GWR (60-69) - each will receive a runner's CD-walkman also donated by Mizuno.
Improvers: We also wanted to recognise improved performances as well as winning times, so the six runners listed above will each receive a small prize donated by Mizuno, Sugoi or Run and Become (Cardiff's specialist running shop).
And finally, every runner who took part in all 4 races will receive a goody bag containing a few items from Mizuno, Run and Become, Isostar and Stinger. We have a few spare goody bags so the rest will be given out to those who did three events and maybe others if there are enough to go round. We should point out that there would also have been a few goody bag items donated by Tesco, but the voucher they gave us was lost when the race director had his wallet snatched in a Paris metro station :)
See you at the relay,
Roger Chamberlain, Sri Chinmoy AC

A week of wintry weather leading up to the race did not bode well, but on the night a window of clear (if chilly) conditions appeared just in time. Twenty nine runners braved the cold winds to take part in our first two mile race of the year. Vik and Liz Baldwin from Nailsea took the honours in the ladies event, and GWR's Moya Church ran well to claim third place and the first vet 50-59 medal.Moya's clubmate Audrey Butler also did a double with the vet 60-69 medal and sixth place overall. Medals also went to Lorraine Thorn, Ingrid Megarademy and Rachel Styles, despite a little confusion over the results from the race officials - sorry to all concerned and thanks to those who noticed the omission - fortunately it was all resolved and everyone went home with the right gong.
Among the men, Rob Smyth set a blistering pace coming through the one mile mark in under 5 minutes. Of course, that second lap is a tough challenge, especially when you are out in front on your own, but Rob still managed an excellent 10.25 ahead of fellow Bristol University runner Alastair McColl who was second with 11.01. Emlyn Williams looked very relaxed in third place (12.19) while former winner of these races (on a regular basis), Gary Hughes from City of Bath AC, made his comeback with 12.55. Mark Adams, Alisdair Fyfe and Andy Wright completed the seven medal positions. Agegroup awards went to three veterans Martin Church (1st vet 60-69) from GWR, Ronald Denney (2nd vet 60-69) of Sevenoaks AC and Mike Nutt (1st vet 50-59). Youngster Joe Gibson made a great debut, finishing strongly on a challenging course.
The series prizes this year have been donated by Mizuno - a pair of shoes worth up to 75 pounds to the male and female series winners. For those not familiar with the system, medal winners get points in each race and the highest number of points wins the series. In the event of a tie, the runner with the shortest cumulative time from the three events takes the prize. Points so far are as follows (note that winners of a vet medal get points for that in addition to the points for their overall position, hence Moya Church being ahead after race 1).
Moya Church 8 Vik Baldwin 7 Liz Baldwin 6 Lorraine Thorn 4 Audrey Butler 4 Ingrid Megarademy 3 Rachel Styles 1
Rob Smyth 7 Alistair McColl 6 Emlyn Williams 5 Gary Hughes 4 Mark Adams 3 Martin Church 3 Alisdair Fyfe 2 Mike Nutt 2 Andy Wright 1 Ronald Denney 1
In addition, there will be goody bags presented to everyone who takes part in all the races in the series, and a few mystery prizes (all to be given out at the relay in July).
Thanks to all who took part and to the marshals who shivered even more than the runners! Our next race is 5kms on June 6th.
