Sri Chinmoy encouraged his students to attempt the English Channel, in line with his philosophy of self-transcendence - getting joy from expanding your own boundaries.

In 1985, Vasanti Niemz from Germany became the first member of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team to cross the Channel. In 2010, she swam a 2nd EC solo, as part of an individual English Channel triathlon from Dover to Aachen.

Sri Chinmoy Races 3 x 1 mile relay, Wednesday 26 July 2017, The Meadows, Edinburgh

Our 3 x 1 mile relays are always a fun filled highlight of our summer series and this year was no exception.  A record ninety nine teams took part this year. All ages seemed to be represented, which made for a great family atmosphere.

Leading the way after leg one was Matthew Smith from Lasswade with a speedy 4.25.  He held a 10 second lead over Corstorphine ’B’s Ewan Brown with Michael Cameron (EAC/DC squad) third, 2 seconds back.  Lap 2 saw the Corstorphine Junior team, comprising the three Addison brothers, take the lead, with Andrew Addison clocking 4.31.  Andrew Lawler (Edin Uni) brought the composite “DC squad” into 2nd with a 4.50 clocking.   Henrik Henderson kept the Lasswade Juniors in touch in third place.

Addison recorded the fastest leg 2 lap, one second faster than Murray Strain 4.32 who had moved HBT up 6 places to 7th in the process.  Lap 3 saw places change again.  Calum McKenzie of Corstorphine’s 'A' team started the last leg in 6th place. Running a storming 4.19 lap he hunted down all the teams ahead of him to bring them home in 13.59, just 3 seconds ahead of David Addison who anchored the Corstorphine juniors to 2nd place overall.   Roaridh Miller (Central) brought the DC squad home in 3rd, 14.06 (2nd senor team). Corstorphine B team, with Scott Pilkington, came home in 4th (3rd senior team) in14.22, showing the strength in depth at the club just now

The women's race saw Amy Frankland lead the Edin Uni Hares and Hounds team home on leg 1 in 5.28 from The Pink Panthers/EAC Juniors Katie Johnson in 5.33 and CAAC ‘s Caitlin McKenzie in third with 5.49.  Sophie Collins maintained the Hairies lead with a 5.29 clocking on leg 2.  Caitlin Arnott bought CAAC up into 2nd, clocking 5.31.  Rebecca Grieve kept the EAC juniors in touch in third place.   Leg 3 saw Katie Reynolds clock the joint fastest women's lap of 5.22 to bring the students home in 16.19.  Emma Johnson clocking the same lap time to bring  EAC juniors into 2nd and claim the junior team medals  with 16.56.  Jessica Mcleod, 5.40 brought CAAC home in 17.00 minutes for 3rd (2nd ladies team) and Kathleen Dempsey led the Team shorts/EAC ladies into 4th overall (3rd ladies team) with 18.19.

Joanna Brown in the mixed “North Berwick Browns “ team also ran 5.22 on leg 3   to tie the fastest ladies  lap time.

In the keenly contested 0/50 Men’s race Gavin Noble, Dunbar, Derek Newport, Penicuik and Ian Duff bought the “Wrong Direction” team home in 16.06 ahead of PH racing teams 17.17.  The composite trio of Yvonne Crilley (Lothian), Anne Peat and Sharyn Ramage (EAC) were leading WV50 team in 19.48. The Silver Foxes with Kenny Gunn-Russell, Alex Agnew, and Jim Scott were leading MV60 team.
An evergreen composite team of Willie Murray, Portobello, Keith Weston and Betty Gilchrist, both Ferranti with a combined age, allegedly, of 220 years took the 0/70 medals.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the event.  Splits are all worked out manually and names entered  from “hand written“ entry forms.  If you spot any mistakes, please do mail us and let us know, do share/link results with your fellow runners. Please use any pics on club reports /social media, just give us a name check.

Here are the results from last night's relay race and also the fastest times of the night.    These are compiled to the available data which we have but if you have any queries please contact us at edinburghraces@runandbecome.com.   There may be the odd typo/split error which we are happy to look into and rectify as necessary.

We would like to give a HUGE APOLOGY to the TOP KATS team who actually came in 2nd female team and we didn't award them their medals at the prize giving.  We did give them medals after the prize giving and the results have been changed to show their 2nd place.  Well done girls.

Lastly, A VERY BIG THANK YOU to everyone who came along.  We wouldn't have been able to organise last night's race without some help, and thank you to everyone who came along to help us on the night.  And of course to the runners, you really make the atmosphere with your enthusiasm for the relays, which we all love organising and running.

Self Transcendence 1 mile race, the Meadows, Wednesday 26 June 2013

Firstly, apologies for the delay in awarding the medals.  This was a very big field (97 runners) so took a little longer than usual.

Also apologies to Mike Taylor, HBT 4.55 who was 7th male  and wasn't given a mention at the prize giving.  We'll have a medal for you next time you come!

Result Run and Become 20th Anniversary 2 mile race 2011

Photos have now been posted up on the gallery

We would like to thank ASICS UK for donating Asics Hyperspeed racing shoes and socks to Robert Riddell, MV50 who ran 10.47 to beat Sandy Cameron's time of 11.32 in the race held 20 years ago (17 July 1991).

There was a fabulous turnout for the Self Transcendence  2 mile  race on weds 20th July 20th. The race co-incided with the 20th birthday of Run and Become,  Edinburgh’s specialist running shop, who have helped  support the events over the years. In keeping with the occasion there were several “20” themes and the entry fee of 20p was certainly appreciated!

Accompanying the usual medals were spot prizes  donated by ASICS; HILLY: Assist and SIS(Science in sport). There were prizes for anyone who ran the race held 20 years ago on 17th july 1991. And it was good to see six runners from the Class of 91!

The winner on the night was Murray Strain(HBT) GB orienteering  international and  obviously having a good work out before his participation  In the Scottish team  at the Snowdon International hill race. He finished 10 seconds clear of Corstorphine’s Steven O’Brian one of the class of 91 and third placer Ray Ward.

An intensely close finish in the ladies race saw the Trotters Eilish Mckechnie just  dge out Jenny Bannerman ,visiting from the highlands , both being given the same time of 11.17

The mens over50 event produced a bit of excitement as two of the class of 91 battled it out to try and win the pair of ASICS shoes on offer for beating the V 50 time of Sandy Cameron from 20 years ago of 11.30.

In the end Robert Riddell of EAC in 10.47 proved the stronger on the day over  Falkirk’s Kenny Rankin(10.56).Other runners from the 1991 race were Steven O,Briens brother Chris and Dad Paul, together with Jim McGregor from Moray Road Runners. Themed prize winners were also won by  Keith Dunlop of EAC in 20th place, and mike Anderson of Corstorphine  (race number 20). There were also some collective prizes for Corstorphine and HBT who both turned out over 20 runners! Many trotters were spotted  sporting Robin Thomas replica masks in honour of one of their  much loved original members. Who unfortunately couldn’t make the race as  he was delayed, awaiting a delivery of liquid refreshment for their  upcoming club handicap.

Special mention to Dan Gay and Al Anthony who had a determined battle for 12th and 13th place  just 10 days after they both completed the Ramsay Round. Dan had planned and prepared well for an assault on this Classic Scottish epic. Al ,rumour has it decided 2 days before to go and accompany Dan in the early stages and successfully completed the whole trip. The Ramsay,  named after Edinburgh hill running legend Charlie Ramsay, is often  likened to “Everest in a day” as the 70 mile route of the Lochaber hills which must be completed in 24 hours includes almost 29,000 feet of climbing .Check out http://www.ramsaysround.com/

Self Transcendence 3 x 1 mile relays 26 july 2006

Results of the Self Transcendence 3 x 1 mile relays held on Wednesday 26 July 2006 at the Meadows, Edinburgh, Scotland

Race results and fastest laps follow this report. A record field of 41 teams took part in the Self Transcendence 3 x 1 mile relays held on Wednesday 26 July 2006.
Northern Ireland internationalist, Steve Cairns (4.27) bought HBT home on leg 1 with a narrow lead over Pitreavie's Paul McCloskey (4.29) and Arbroath's Stuart Campbell (4.30).While junior Sarah Inglis (5.13) bought Lothian home as first girl's team, Welshman, Don Naylor (4.28) increased the Bog Trotters lead on the 2nd leg to 13 secs over Pitreavie who held a 4 sec lead over Arbroath.
Pitreavie's Scottish Inernationalist, John Newsom, although equally Cairn's 4.27 split, made little inroads on the Trotters with new signing Murray Strain (4.30) bringing them home 10 seconds clear.

UNFORTUNATELY, WE EXPERIENCED SOME PROBLEMS RECORDING TIMES ON THE FIRST LEG BETWEEN 5.20 AND 6 MINS. ALTHOUGH THIS DOESN'T AFFECT THE OVERALL FINISHING TIMES OF THE TEAMS THE SPLIT TIMES FOR LEGS 1 AND 2 FOR SOME OF THE TEAMS ARE OPEN TO QUESTION! IF ANY RUNNER WHO TOOK THEIR OWN SPLIT TIME CAN CONTACT US TO HELP US "FILL IN THE GAPS" IT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED. PHONE: 0131 313 5300 OR EMAIL:edinburgh@runandbecome.com
